Building A Green Supply Chain

The busway industry is pushing hard for green development all along the industrial chain. They are using more recycled materials and setting up traceability systems to make things sustainable. It seems like this covers everything from start to finish.

A bunch of top companies are working with their upstream suppliers to build this full traceability setup for recycled aluminum and copper. It tracks the whole process, from recycling the metals, then smelting and rolling them, right up to making the final products. They use digital tools to keep tabs on the materials through their entire life cycle. That part feels a bit technical, but it makes sense for keeping things accountable.

The system runs on blockchain technology with a distributed ledger that logs all the info for each batch of recycled metals. From the recycling stage all the way to the finished goods, everything gets recorded. Customers can just scan a QR code on the product to check out the percentage of recycled materials, the carbon footprint numbers, and any certifications. Right now, the carbon footprint for these certified recycled conductor materials is way lower, less than one third of what it is for metals mined from scratch.

One sustainable development director from a company in this system mentioned that they make their core suppliers use recycled materials for at least 30 percent of the total. And they are planning to bump that up to 50 percent over the next three years. This approach cuts down the environmental effects of the products a lot. It also helps the recycled metal market grow stronger because of these green buying practices.

More and more, the market is noticing this kind of innovation. For several big projects, the tenders specifically ask for products made with certified recycled materials. Some international customers are even making it a must in their supply chain checks. Through managing the green supply chain like this, companies are meeting their environmental duties. At the same time, it gives them an edge in the market that stands out from others.

I think the traceability bit is what really drives it home, though not everything is perfect yet.
